A Glass Railing System Is Not Just Glass. It Is A Structural System Made Of Four Parts: The Glass Panels, The Anchoring Method (Base Shoe Channel Or Standoff Posts), The Handrail (Or No Top Rail), And The Attachment Detail To The Slab Or Structure. Each Part Affects Cost, Timeline, Code Compliance, And How The Finished Railing Looks.
- Glass: Tempered Or Tempered-Laminated. Laminated Is Code-Required For Most Guardrails In Florida. Thickness Ranges From 1/2" To 3/4". Laminated Costs More And Weighs More.
- Base Shoe (Aluminum U-Channel): Clean Look, No Posts. Highest Engineering Load. Best For Balconies, Pool Decks, Modern Homes.
- Standoff Posts: Round Or Square Posts With Point-Support Fittings. Lets You Reduce Glass Thickness. Better For Windy Elevated Applications.
- Top Rail: Aluminum Or Wood-Look Cap. Frameless (No Top Rail) Is Cleanest But Requires Thicker Laminated Glass.

- Shop Drawings: Sealed By A Florida PE. Includes Wind Load Calcs, Anchor Schedule, And Glass Spec.
- Material Buyout: Aluminum Extrusion And Glass Cut To Spec. Miami-Dade NOA-Referenced Hardware Where Required.
- Shop Fab: Base Shoe Cut, Drilled, Powder Coated Or Anodized. Glass Sent To Tempering And Laminating.
- Install: Base Shoe Anchored First (Adhesive Anchors Or Through-Bolts Per Engineering). Glass Set And Dry-Glazed With Setting Blocks. Handrail Capped Last.
- QA: Deflection Test, Anchor Torque Check, Glass Edge Inspection.

- Aluminum Base Shoe: Mill Finish, Clear Anodized, Bronze Anodized, Powder Coat (Any Color), Kynar 500 (Longest Life In Coastal).
- Glass: Clear, Low-Iron (Extra Clear), Tinted (Bronze, Gray, Blue), Sandblasted, Ceramic Frit Pattern.
- Handrail: Aluminum To Match Base, Stainless Steel, Wood Cap On Aluminum Sub-Rail.
Code + HVHZ + NOA Basics
Any Guardrail 30" Or More Above Grade In A Miami-Dade Or Broward High-Velocity Hurricane Zone Requires Wind-Load Engineering To FBC 2023. Glass Must Be Tempered-Laminated Per IBC 2407 And FBC. Anchors To Concrete Must Be Miami-Dade NOA-Approved Or PE-Justified. Uplift And Lateral Loads Are Calculated Per ASCE 7 With Local Wind Speed Maps.
Bottom Line: A Glass Railing In Miami Is Not The Same Product As A Glass Railing In Ohio. Anyone Who Quotes Yours Off An Out-Of-State Catalog Number Is Setting You Up For A Failed Inspection.

- What Wind Load Are You Designing To? Should Be A Real Number In PSF, Based On Site Address And ASCE 7. Not "It'll Be Fine."
- Are Your Anchors NOA-Referenced? Get The NOA Number In Writing.
- Is Your Glass Tempered-Laminated? For Any Guardrail Above 30". No Exceptions.
- What Is Your Warranty And Who Honors It? A One-Year Fabricator Warranty From A Shop That May Not Exist In 24 Months Is Not A Warranty.

Typical: 12-16 Weeks. Broken Down:
- Award To Sealed Shop Drawings: 3-4 Weeks
- Shop Drawings To Fab Complete: 8-10 Weeks (Includes Glass Tempering + Lamination Lead Time)
- Fab To Install Complete: 1-2 Weeks (Depending On Access)
